Berlin Update

wow. so i'm having a hard time choosing for tonight (it's 3:30 AM now) between Guido Schneider & Dan Ghenacia @ the Horst & then Shonky & Daniel FX @ the Tape Club. And I already promised to be @ the Villa circa 3 AM as some DJ/producers I met will be playing there and I love to go support cool talented friends. What to do?

i know what you guys want... you want me to quit my yammering & get to the pictures. right?!!!!

It's been beautiful & sunny here in Berlin which i'm told is rare..... i took these pics walking through Mitte.

I walked along the Spree River next to the Berliner Dom and shot these:

The Fersehnturm

And a few pics from the 360 degree panoramic up top

Below is Alexanderplatz

Next to the Fersehnturm (and across from the Radisson with the Aquadom in it is the Marien Kirche (Marien Church)

And right next to the Fersehnturm and in the same platz is the Rotes Rathaus (Red Town Hall):

in case you didn't get the very important message

MY PHONE IS SUSPENDED UNTIL 4 JUNE.

i repeat. my phone will be out of service until 4 june.

please e-mail me your phone number if you want to make sure i have it: djzenith AT djzenith.de as someone purposefully & willfully took my phone. i know this as they tried to use it. i saw in my att online that they had.

i'm repeating this in case some of you didn't read the previous post.

will somebody please try texting/calling my phone and e-mail me me about what happens. i don't know if suspended means... you can't do anything with my phone or that my texting/voice mail is gone too. please... one of you blog readers help a sister out

i'm kinda worried i'll get an important business call and they won't be able to leave a voice mail. thanks.

But wait... there's more !!!

bugger must have stole my phone cuz...

being the web ninja that I am, i went on my data usage plan for my mobile to look up to see what numbers may have been dialed or texted from my phone since i lost it. they sent three texts and i'm sure none of them worked. how do i know this?

for the life of me i haven't been able to figure out how to text local phones. i was able to text friends in san francisco, know how to dial out of the country just fine on a regular phone, but texting local is different. can't local text for some reason. can't call from mobile @ all because german telephone companies don't let unregistered SIM cards on their network or some such

so person who took/stole my phone tried texting three numbers and then dialing a few international numbers. i had a local german friend call the numbers for me. of course, the one local mobile number that *did* work & answer said he doesn't know anything about phone.

don't tell me he wasn't trying to text his own phone to find out my phone number. guy *really* doesn't speak english. this i believe. i talked to him myself.

but the reality was the times on the first call was 3:49 AM and then 4:45 AM on a text and then three texts @ 10:45 AM, 10:47, 10:52

the truth is if that person wanted me to have my phone back, it would be @ tresor in the lost & found.

so sadly i will have to shell out some $$$ for a new phone. prices are f*ing ridiculous. thank you US gov't for assisting in creating a couple telephone monopolies that f*ck their customers royal. ditto for the electric company situation also. thank you US govt. thanks to you there's only a few phone companies to go with and they all suck donkey terds.

moral of the story is... i suspended my phone service until 4 June. don't panic. i didn't get eaten by a lion @ a techno club or anything... phone is just suspended.

will somebody please try texting/calling my phone and e-mail me about what happens. i don't know if suspended means... you can't do anything with my phone or that my texting/voice mail is gone too. please... one of you blog readers help a sister out

i'm kinda worried i'll get an important business call and they won't be able to leave a voice mail. thanks.

Washington, DC

I am very happy to report that the DC dance music scene is going strong! Very Strong. In fact it's the best that it's been in a long time!

I took some pictures whilst out & about. Enjoy!

Muse
Muse has two sweet rooms, both upstairs and downstairs. I realize it doesn't look packed in these pictures... Silly me I waited until everyone left to remember to take pictures! The weekend I was there they had Andrea Ferlin, Garth, chris burns & dirty one @ a party called Electric Cabaret Thursday night and then Justin Martin of Dirty Bird Friday night.

Here's Chris Burns DJing Upstairs:

The Downstairs Bar

The Über Cool Upstairs Bar

Jimmy Valentine's
This venue is a rad 150 person venue in North East without so much as a sign! But those who are in the know... are really *in the know*

Juan Zapata of East Coast Boogiemen was on the decks when I visited this fabulous venue....

18th Street Lounge
Last but not least, there's 18th Street Lounge, Thievery Corporation's place which is a ridiculously cool space with three rooms and a balcony/lounge outside in the back.

Howdy Folks

So right now I'm busy stuffing the new 91 trax I have into my brain. Part of DJing for me is this memorization ritual.

Obviously, it's impossible to memorize anything. But you have to understand what a track's about and how you feel when you play it. DJing is about creating a mood the crowd will enjoy. One where they want to dance and smile and laugh.

Dancing takes you to another place. My new tracks are ridiculously sick. If you could see me right now, you'd see I'm smiling widely

I'm getting ready to go out. It seems like so much of my energy is spent motivating to go out. I'd prefer to be by myself for a bit right now playing music... But since I'm travelling it's time to get the best out of every place. Saturday nights are for dance music.

When the travelling's done I'll be ready to get things going. I'm looking to throw a party in June so stay tuned

D-D-D-D-A-A-A-A-M-M-M-M-M-N-N-N-N-N`

Seriously. I mean it. This clip from Gui Boratto in San Francisco is really, really, really bitchin'. Gui really ripped it up. Truthfully, I don't like most live performers but he was most excellent. I was exhausted and I'd start to leave and he'd yank me back in

trouble

we're dog-sitting this little bundle of trouble who refuses to detach himself from my lap. which is a little tricksy... white dog hair, black velvet courduroy... not so much

i have taught him sit and lay down so far. he's getting fat from all the treats....

This should be sufficiently interesting

So tomorrow or actually in wayyyy less than 12 hours I will see someone I haven't seen in umpty-ump years. I am serious. A long freaking time

I think 18 years it's been since I"ve seen this person. I also gave significant thought to contacting my college sweetheart, too. But after second thought.... NOPE. Not such a good idea. I'm sure he has the same hair cut he's had his entire life. and who knows why i even give a rat's azz about something so silly anywhosit?

But he's a rich interesting somebody you've all heard of. Why can't I just be a smart little girl and go ahead and take the plunge for money? Why? Why can't I just get with the program?

Working for it is way much harder.

Sigh

Yeah, didn't want to see the ex. No need to go that far back. Although it would almost be worth it to see the utter look of shock & awe. I mean, i couldn't look anymore different than high school

tomorrow will be good. first meeting with a friend from 18 years ago!

wish me luck

Where am I??

Apparently I'm not allowed to add my own colors to my posts anymore. HURUMPH. FFFFFT

Yesterday I was working on this project house. By the way, none of the pictures in this post are clickable. They're all 400 pixel size only. Sorry, no time for clickable pictures today

Chalmette House

Today, I'm @ one of my two favourite coffee shops in the french quarter.

It's actually a little bit chilly right now. And i'm bundled up a bit. It's early yet.

I fell over in a heap the last few nights. Not from the work on the house... That was easy.

I just needed some rest I think. Being around a lot of people kinda wears me out. Although I must say, i really enjoyed the americorps and project site staff. they were really great

i think i feel this way because of all the all-night dance parties i've been to recently. more than i did all of last year all in 1 month it seems.

my friends get here thursday. happy b-day R!!!! it's french quarter festival. i hope i live through it. what can i say? wish me luck!

WMC 2009: Mobilee Showcase Party, 29 March 2009, Studio K, Miami, FL

Let me shout it from the roof tops! Mobilee Records of Germany in da' heezy! Mad props.

All these DJ/producers are as deadly on the decks as they are in the studios! This was my favourite party of all of WMC. The sound was the best. The people the best. Case in point... I was so tired my eyes were purple-red and i could barely stand up. my feet was sliced from several different pairs of sandals. i was pooped from 3 weeks solid of shift sleeping and all-night dancing compared with a heavy running/walking regimen.

started trying to leave @ 4 AM. actually left round about 6:15 AM. It was that good. See for yo' self! By the way... It sounds a little loud... That's a product of the fact that I'm literally vibrating right in front of the speaker and my camera's fairly sensitive. The sound was great!

THIS CLIP ROCKS IT!!!!!!!!!!!

This one's pretty awesome too!

Why we do relief work

As I get ready to go back to New Orleans I thought I'd post this clip of a Hurricane Katrina Survivor telling his story. It's easy to wonder why these people haven't been able to rebuild until you take a look @ Eddie. Most people that the relief organization I work with had flood insurance until the federal gov't removed the mandatory flood rider.

This sky-rocketed the price of flood insurance to the point where a lot of people couldn't afford it. Most of these people thought that if the federal government thought it was no longer mandatory, they were safe. They thought wrong.

This is a 7 minute video... FYI

Sunday School for Degenerates Party, 28-29 March 2009 WMC

This party was held @ an awesome venue in Miami, the Ice Palace with a killer line-up. In case you guys are wondering... YES... I'm wearing ear plugs (not even filters but PLUGS the WHOLE time I'm shooting this video and everything else). There was only 2 parties where the sound engineer seemed to understand about loud sound. When it's done right, you can stand up against the speakers and it doesn't hurt.

Steve Bug, Solomun, and Joris Voorn ripped her up here. Just ripped it!

I HAVE A NEW GOD... His name is Joris Voorn. And if he can't be the god for any reason... Steve Bug is the runner up.

I think it was the disco ball underwear....

For Liz Taylor, she says white diamonds bring her luck... If you believe the advert anywho. For me I think it's disco ball underwear! No. REALLY!

last time i was here in Paris I had different equipment difficulties... This time it was once again serato not liking one of the tables (again... and misbehaving in an entirely different way). But fortunately this time I had practiced DJing with one table and had the manual with me... *just in case*. One of the serato disks had gotten scratched during transit. Luckily I had 2... not 1 backup... A patron scratched another serato disk.

Three years ago it started out with technical difficulties also and also ended wonderfully. I think it's the disco ball underwear that got me through!

It went down something like this...

I had been playing a lot of synth-heavy 80s... some contemporary, some disco, several Bryan Ferry tracks for the home field advantage...

As I ordered a coca-light sans glace, I was talking to my friend/barkeep and I said to him, I have been playing down tempo because I think they would prefer it... He said in a very French way... "Perhaps... It really depends on the crowd"

I said to myself... than dangit I want to play freaking dance music. And that's just what I did! And I took off like a rocket ship... I am not sure what happened! And almost everyone I care about in Paris was there to share my joy with me. I couldn't ask for anything more from life.

I think I quite possibly had the best night of my life. To date. Ever.

Thank you Paris friends for making me so happy! I will surely not wait 3 years to come back! I really had the time of my life hanging out with you guys! Very healing to my soul.

Ick poo, mushy

Since I'm really sh*tty @ mushy stuff in person and I know most of my friends come by my blog @ some point every so often... I'll do what every emotionally dysfunctional person does... Say it electronically. I mean why say in person what you can blast to a ba-zillion of your closest friends on the internet? I mean really????!!!

So if you are one of my Paris buddies... I'm really enjoying your company. New friends of my old friends, you guys rock, too! I can't tell you how much spending time with you guys has done to heal my wounded spirit.

And SF peeps... boy do I love YOU guys. SF amigos... you guys rock. I've been getting texts and e-mails from you guys... Your post cards are on the way. A little something goofy from me to you. And DC peeps. Ditto. I'm on my way to you guys soon. You know who you are.

BIG MAD LOVE. Peace out.

Talking heads will make time with The Traamps. Eminem will get busy with Lauryn Hill. And then we will dance. We will dance for hours. Uprooting trees & shrubs & flowers. Like vikings. With horns on our heads! But I digress....

You can take the girl out of the bar...

But apparently not the bar out of the girl!!! Three years later and some of my habits haven't changed! Special shout to my favourite peeps in Paris who kept me out until 5:30 AM.

Here's some pics from inside. I don't know why these European cities make it so difficult to get to bed before 4 AM. I've only been to bed before 4 AM 2 times in almost 2 weeks. And never before 3!!!

And my new Parisian boots. Ooo la la

Back in Paris

The funny thing about being here is I discovered a couple of things:

1) I have no idea of the names of the streets of all the places I used to go to... YET
2) I'm able to find them all just as sure as I can find the back of my hand. It's crazy. I would love to understand how that works

This city has a magic about it. I really feel like I'm home when I wander around here. I know i didn't live here for that long but it really did make an impression.

One Awesome Parisienne

I arrived in Paris last night. i want to say a big special thanks to my ex-landlady for hooking me up in such a major way. My flat is here

She:

1) Found the website where I found the flat I'm now staying in
2) Went to the flat to meet the owner/look @ the flat for me
3) Got the keys from him as he's in Rome right now and wasn't going to be here to meet me
4) reserved an airport shuttle for me when I had a problem with the website and even e-mailed the number to my mobile when I lost it (silly, silly me)

-- AND --

5) She read my e-mail about my favourite breakfast of baguettes and cheese and stocked the fridge with not only that but some home-made soup
6) Was here waiting @ the flat to meet me when the shuttle arrived. There's nothing more awesome than getting out of the shuttle to an excited person that's so happy you're here calling your name out of the upstairs window

Thanks to my awesome Parisienne friend. I'm very lucky to have your friendship

I've been a very bad, bad putty-tat

I've been going 24x7 since I've been here to Berlin. Tonight I just decided to cut myself a little slack. Today is the first day I didn't get up and go running in the Tiergarten after 4 hours sleep and staying out until 6 - 7 AM.

My second night here I ended up @ a dance party that went all night on a Wednesday! That's right... I said it... a Wednesday.

Berlin is fantastic for a lot of reasons. Let me elaborate on a few of them...

-- I've always said that you shouldn't need chemicals to enjoy your dance night out. They should enhance the experience... not make it. If this is true, one can go out dead cold sober and dance their fool headz off all night long happily... no problem! Berlin has proven me right... The music makes it impossible to leave. And you'll find @ least 50% of the crowd still there @ 0530 . It's die Musik!!!!

-- The architecture is spectacular. I mean wow. I've uploaded a few pics from inside of the Reichstag (their government building) and the surrounding buildings. Noteworthy item: It's proudly noted on a sign in the building that the sham of a government called the third reich never met in the Reichstag.

-- die Klubz... die Klubz! It's not just the clubs... Staggering home exhausted from the party below i walked by a raging broken beat party and then also an indie band. All @ 0545 AM. Lookie here kiddies:

Here's Shaka in a live set... Below I've posted a clip from his DJ set.

Now we have Portable/Body Code playing live:

Some Pics from some of my favourite, nameless Amsterdam establishments

I'll be posting more amsterdam photos later today... this is most definitely NOT my most favourite amsterdam establishment... Just one of them.

By the way... All these pictures are clickable... Clicking on them will do a pop-up to actual size.

You'd have to disable your pop-up blocker though...

PS --> If this establishment looks familiar to you... it probably should. hint, hint, hint

Amsterdam Video Clip

I'm actually posting now from Berlin circa: 0230. I LOVE IT HERE! I LOVE it here! I also love, love, love, LOVE Amsterdam!!!! Sorry. Just had to share man.

Anyway. As I was typing... Here's the first video clip from my trip... I'm sorting through some images and uploading them but for now... this should tide you over. That noise you're hearing in the audio is real live serious *zz wind. The wind didn't actually feel as bad as it sounds in the audio... But it's March now. I can imagine right about January/February it was really, really, fierce.

I think I'm going to end up being up all night packing/doing laundry. Which will set me up pretty for a full-length siesta on the plane.

I've gotten pretty good @ this plane thing. I just put myself "in the zone".

See ya' in April

Woo Hoooooo

So I'm listening to Funkentanzen right now! In my headphones... I'm really, really, really happy with it. For about a zillion reasons. Not the least of which is that I really wasn't in the mood to record it right now... But it had to be done. But thanks to this process I've been working on... I was able to crank it out anyway.

First thing tomorrow morning when I'm feeling human (caffeinated)... I'll be chopping this gizmo up into tracks and uploading it for you! I'll also be handing it off to my guy for reproduction so I'll have the hard copies in the mail before I leave for Europe.

E-mail me if you'd like a copy and you're uncertain as to whether or not you will be receiving one...

Thursday, February 26, 2009

Don't Touch the *(*$! Knobs... Whatever you do

So I finally got a chance to settle down & record last night... and one of my New Year's Resolutions was to get jiggy with the mixer (oh yes i *did*).

So I thought I was getting all slick with it... It was 'round about midnight:30 that I got around to listening to the final product... the mixdown.

All I can communicate about that was: wow! Instead of just killing the bass, etc, and so forth... It was cutting out all of the sound. So I sounded like a mixing idiot. I really *need* a new mixer (Santa... where are you?). It's not the fault of the guy that sold it to me... It fell in one of my moves some time ago.

So... note to self... don't touch the f*!#$@!@#$ knobs. They no workey.

So I got up @ 0530. And warmed it up. And re-recorded. Why you ask? Time's getting short. I need time to work on the graphics and i have to review it properly "just in case" before I hand it over.

And this time you'll be happy to know I'm going to do a little peer pre/review. So Funkentanzen is on the way.

And a morning begun with a booty shakedown is a fine morning indeed. w00t!

Hello China!

What kind of engi-nerd would I be without my statistics program attached to my website? I mean what kind of nerd would I be really?

And this month already I have had 17.22 GBs of data transferred to you, China. domains...

I'm surprised @ your choices in CDs, however. I get why you like the Answer Is... but the other one you like I consider taking down on a regular basis...

I get that it's a departure from anything else i've done but I recommend one of the newer ones... seriously

Also... if any of you would like to fly me to your country... My schedule is flexible... I will find a way to accomodate you!

Holey Shiznit

So first off.... Hella Big Thank you... I know some of you listened and commented in the chat window. Thanks! Seriously. And did we say 2 hours? we meant 2 hours and 40 minutes.... PHEW!

As far as the set goes... I think pretty much everything that can go wrong with serato has gone wrong for me... in such a short time frame. mean i only switched to serato @ the end of last year... i'm still in love with the technology... i'm just saying... it's TRICKSY

so i got this really cool colored control vinyl. which is lighter weight than the regular ones... now that i've been on the internet i think it's cuz i didn't get official rane ones...

what that meant is that i had experienced difficulty mixing from the right table until chris rescued me with one of their heavy-weight regular black rane vinyl control disks... it took me a minute to figure out it was a weird issue i hadn't encountered before... this issue made it impossible to wind back with the vinyl once you'd heard that sweet spot in the record you were looking to mix from. something wrong with the grooves. which sucked as both tracks on that table in the first 4 tracks were a little tricksy to mix... not ones where the down beat started up regular-style.

note to self... i'm taking a sh*t ton of the heavy-weight control disks with me to Europe as I'm not leaving anything to chance. i *can* mix from one table and can totally do that if needed but i really don't want to have to. along with spare needles, my cans, and my own sl-1 control box with back up cabling. oh. and i'm also taking the kitchen sink! again... just as a back up!

as far as the content goes.... it blew even me out of the water in the intensity department... i mean playing that way... after the 2nd hour i seriously started to crash.... no dinner and heavy duty techno... woo-HOO!

that's why i took it from that fierce techno track to the fierce funky-twerk.... nobody can do that level for that long... i don't care what you got going. the human sensory system just doesn't function like that!

i just wanted to say thanks again... To Paul & Chris and to you for your support. I really do love you guys very much. It's cheesy & cliche but i really do think i'm the most lucky girl in the world sometimes... i thank my lucky stars every day!

What's in a Name?

What name you ask? My family name. Not the one I received through my mother's marriage but my ancestral ones...

I really wasn't given diddly for information. For example, on my 18th birthday I was informed that my grandmother was north carolina cherokee from a reservation and I was given the name of the reservation. They even gave me a book on Cherokee Indians as a birthday present.

Thanks, mum & dad for the 4-1-1. Could have told me sooner, but hey. Who's gonna nit-pick. I know what year she was born. But only because my memory can be freakishly good sometimes.

I'm in a lull here @ work whilst the requirements get finalized on my next project. And to my credit I have read 100 pages out of a technology book today, and written a prototype (yay, me)

But now my eyeballz feel like they're gonna fall out so I started researching my family name.

I was told we were either Van/Von __________ . Name omitted for privacy concerns. And that part of our family was Swedish and the other was northern Germanic. Well, they got the Northern Germany part right. The last name is a different spelling of a region in northern germany.

But guess what? We're dutch. We definitely were Vans (not von which is a swedish prefix)... And part of our family stayed in Germany on the other side of the border and part of my family migrated to the Netherlands. Makes perfect sense.

No wonder I'm such a water freak. The Dutch were fierce sea farers.

Well I guess it's a good thing I just booked myself @ the world-famous hemp hotel in March. I'll be conducting a little... field research :-) You can infer whatever you like people. Whatever you like. I've got about a perma-smile on my face every time i think about heading back to Amsterdam! Giddy giddy up.

Vinyl to Digital

So last night I recorded my first vinyl track to digital format using Serato. We can add this to the list of things that I wished I started sooner.... Oh what a long list that is!

You'll be happy to know my first EP I'm going to digital with is the Talking Head's Naked. I fell in love with it as a young whipper snapper and I still love it now....

All of this in preparation for Paris. I'm scouring my retro catalogue looking for stuff that beat matches well together. What an undertaking!

I've been wanting to get jiggy with this type of a thing for some time though now and I suppose Paris is an acceptable excuse.

Now that I'm done with this post I'm going to finish going through the rest of the pics from my trip to the American History Museum back in Dec.

Is it February already? Jeezus....
